The SureColor P900 17-inch Photo Printer ($1,195) replaces the Editors’ Choice Award-winning SureColor P800, which we reviewed here in October 2016, and continues Epson’s tradition of impeccable quality wide-format photo and graphic arts printers. A step up from the 13-inch SureColor P700 (another favorite), the P900 produces exceptional photos and artwork from 17 by 22 inches, as well as impressive banners up to 17 inches wide by 129 inches (10 feet 9 inches). ) length. Like the P800 before it, the P900 excels with excellent performance, high-performance software, and competitively low running costs (for its genre). Epson says the P900 is 30 percent thinner than its predecessor, and in fact, when folded up and running, the P900 is noticeably smaller than the P800. With trays extended and ready to print, the P900 measures 20.5 by 24.2 by 35.6 inches (HWD) and weighs 35.3 pounds. It’s 14 pounds lighter than the P800, but you still have to make careful decisions about where you put it, because you won’t want to move it around.

The P900 comes with an all-new, high-definition, color-calibrated 4.3-inch HD color touchscreen. Unlike the control panels on previous models, this allows you to configure print jobs and the printer in ways that previously required Epson Photo+ and Epson Print Layout, or separate software such as Adobe Photoshop or Light room. This control panel is far superior to what you’ll find on other professional-grade photo printers.

The anatomy of the P900 is very similar to the anatomy of the P700, the technology that allows it to print such fine images and illustrations. To get high-quality prints from this or any other near-dedicated photo printer, you need high-quality print media. The P900 can print on 17×22-inch cut sheets and larger 2- and 3-inch roll paper with a 17-inch-wide core. Aside from the ability to print on wider paper and the extra cost that comes with it, everything about using premium paper on the P700 is the same as on the P900. Printer interfaces are USB 3.0, 100BaseT Ethernet, 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, AirPrint and Google Cloud Print. There is no support for SD card or USB drive.

In addition to applications for Windows and macOS, Epson has an iOS application that can perform professional-level color management, including automatic selection of color profiles, monochrome fine-tuning mode and support for all Epson premium documents.EPSON. The Best Photo Printers In 2022

While the P900 can certainly print regular documents on regular copy paper, it’s like taking a Maserati to the grocery store. If you need to print the occasional personal or business document, it’s better to buy an inexpensive second-rate printer.

Our regular printer speed tests include printing a series of Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents. There’s no point in trying to do that on a $1,200, 10-ink professional photo and graphic design machine with a 10-channel printhead. Don’t look for this printer to produce hundreds of pages of business reports. His only goal is to create great and beautiful works of art, which he does with considerable effort.

Epson rates the P900 at 1 minute 29 seconds for a letter-size print (8.5×11 inches) and 2 minutes 23 seconds for a super tabloid image (13×19 inches). I couldn’t find a rating for 17×22-inch pages, but my tests showed that they lasted 25% longer than super tabloid prints. And that’s good. You probably don’t mind waiting five minutes for a print that will hang on your wall for years.

If you’ve never seen the output of one of these professional-grade photo printers, you might not believe how impressive it can be. It’s hard to get to a salon in these pandemic days, so you might have to buy a printer without seeing it. But if you use quality files and good paper, and make sure you set your printer to the paper’s ICC (International Color Consortium) profile, you’ll be impressed with the first print.

The SureColor P900 produces vivid colors and deep blacks with 10 premium high-precision inks. It also reproduces colors accurately and produces correctly shaped and well-spaced text. For a printer in its class, the P900 has surprisingly low running costs. This doesn’t mean it’s a budget printer – you’ll pay for quality, though not unreasonably so. But the ink cost per milliliter (CPM) is more than acceptable, leaving some room in your budget for premium photo paper that will really make the P900’s output shine.

With these near-special photo printers, each photo or graphic will consume an unpredictable amount of up to 10 different inks, making it nearly impossible to calculate consumption per page. So instead of trying to calculate the cost per page, we use the cost per milliliter of ink. Epson sells each 50ml ink cartridge for $41.99, or about 83 cents per milliliter. The SureColor P700 uses 25ml tanks that are $4 less each, but the CPM is $1.52. 80 ml tanks for the Canon PRO-1000 cost about 75 cents per milliliter.

In general, the more you pay for a larger machine, the lower your CPM, so the 11-ink SureColor P5000 costs about 43 cents per milliliter, or about half (or less) than its competitors. This is certainly something to consider if you plan to use the printer commercially.
