It must have been fate, because the day before I read the post, there was one on the wall, and then the next day, it appeared on Marketplace at a very low price, within driving distance.

Collections To Display In A Letterpress Drawer

These drawers were used in the 18th and 19th centuries to store typefaces, similar to the typeface stamps used today on ink pads. Except at that time, letterpress used a typewriter. This process allows the production of many copies by directly printing repeatedly inked pages raised on paper or a continuous roll of paper. This technique is used in printing newspapers and books.

These drawers are part of a larger cabinet. This is a Stephenson Blake & Company Ltd type case. Beautiful from Sheffield, London. It supports 40 drawers, 1000 types of wood.

This led me back to my old letterpress tray. This is what it looked like the first time I brought the tray home. Dirt that has built up over the years is too much.

Then I remembered I had some wood floor cleaner. It’s really good for cleaning wood, so I tried it too. It works well, but I also find alternating between fine and coarse steel wool helps as well.

It wasn’t until I started scrubbing the interior of the room that I realized there was paper backing. Attached to all of the drawers.

After some experimentation, I found it quite easy to wet each box. People and then use a paint scraper to remove the paper. But I won’t lie, it still takes a lot of time.

I saw this manufacturer’s mark while cleaning. I was excited and decided to do some research. This is what I found.

Stephenson & Blake Ltd was founded in 1818 by Mr. John Stephenson to manufacture high quality printing presses. Stephenson Blake became a world-renowned company, headquartered in Sheffield, England, active as a typewriter from the early 18th century until the 1990s as the last type foundry in England. Since then, the company has changed ownership and transitioned to Special Engineering.

This is a picture of the Black Foundry. The factory bell no longer rings in Stephenson, Sheffield Black, but at least part of the building where Britain’s last great foundry lives.

Flats was created in a development called Impact, named after the sans serif typeface designed by Geoffrey Lee in 1965 for Stephenson, Blake. The company is unrivaled in creating a category during its heyday, leaving its home in Upper Allen Street in 2006 for almost 200 years.

Considering all this and some research on similar drawers, I estimate that my drawer is from the early 1900’s. It was originally used in England. So excited to find out in Australia!

Antique jewelery box from Gloriette Jewellers, 277A Pitt Street, Sydney. I can’t find any information about them, so I think they go back a long way. There are also old fashioned cotton cloths.

I also have 2 old stamped envelopes from the Dance Teachers Union, which was founded in 1906 and is still going strong today.
