Unlike the MOE primary and secondary school systems, there are many players in the early childhood education sector, including 5 main operators and the MOE kindergarten.

This also means that there is no salary table for early childhood educators. Different actors may choose to reward their early childhood educators differently.

According to the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA), the starting salary is $2,200 to $3,550 for a preschool teacher and $1,800 to $3,150 for an educator.

MOE Kindergarten (MK) teachers have a starting salary of $2,500 to $4,106. However, a higher salary also comes with higher requirements. MK requires MK teachers to have a Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Teaching (DECCE-T) or a similar qualification.

There are two possible career paths in early childhood education: one as an educator and one as a preschool teacher. Each path has its own training requirements.

A local degree in early childhood education gives you the opportunity to become an L2 preschool teacher or a senior L2 teacher. This would also allow progression to head teacher or head teacher with an advanced diploma.

Early childhood education is one of the fields eligible for a career test. This means you can try out the job (and get paid during the trial period) before committing to a career in this field.

In the career test, applicants can receive a training allowance of $7.50 to $15 per hour for up to 3 months. Those who stay can also receive a retention incentive of $500 after 3 months and $1,000 after 6 months.

Early childhood education includes the completion of an entrance certificate. CCP offers employers state support in the form of course fees and monthly salaries for the duration of the CCP training.

For future in-service teachers (without training) who wish to join MK, MK offers a teacher training program which is a 9-month sponsored training with a 2-year guarantee.

As this is a sponsored training, successful candidates will receive a starting salary of $2,000-$3,000 at the start of the training program. Course fees are fully funded by the MOE, and successful applicants will also receive a one-time grant of $1,050 for study-related expenses.

Child Care Course

Unlike careers that have limited entry requirements, early childhood education is open to those interested in working with children. In addition to MOE Kindergarten, there are 5 main operators (PAP Community Foundation (PCF)/PCF Sparkletots, NTUC First Campus/My First Skool, MY World/Metropolitan YMCA, E-Bridge Pre-School/Etonhouse International, and Skool4kidz/Kinderland Educare) and other smaller operators.

The Career Trial option also means new carpenters can try the job before committing to this career path, while the Career Conversion program allows mid-career career changers to earn their certification while being paid while they train.
