Business Courses At College – Most business courses must be taken for a letter grade and students are not offered a G/P/NC option. For a complete list of courses that do not offer a G/P/NC option see Courses without G/P/NC Option Courses list.
Priority will be given to first year students in registration. Students wishing to repeat a course (second attempt) may re-register on or about August 15 for fall classes and on or about January 15 for spring classes pending an open seat. Second attempts are permitted for winter and summer classes on open enrollment dates noted in the Office of the Registrar’s academic calendar.

The following groups of students will complete the general education requirements as defined by the Stony Brook Curriculum, often referred to as the SBC.

Students who are not in the above groups will receive D.E.C. D.E.C. The requirements for each student are published in the bulletin available as matriculation (or re-adjustment).
Some SBC requirements will be met by business major core courses. Below is a list of courses that may overlap between business major courses and the SBC curriculum. Please note that courses in bold are required for all declared business management majors. This introductory course is designed to give students an understanding of business practices. It serves as background information for students intending to continue with other business courses and as a general information course for personal use. It includes the study of areas such as the free enterprise system, economics, exploring business careers, consumerism, and business technology. This course introduces business practices and structure among all levels of an organization. Students are encouraged to approach their work from an entrepreneurial perspective, focusing on the value an employee can bring to the company.
This course outlines a mentoring program for students interested in a career in marketing and management. This class is designed to provide an understanding of basic marketing processes and an orientation to the American free enterprise system. Course content includes an in-depth look at seven functions of marketing: communication and interpersonal skills, promotion, selling, economics, purchasing, pricing, and more! Where applicable, real lessons and examples will be used to reinforce course concepts.
This course is designed to provide practical training and experience to students in the field of entrepreneurship and management. Students will gain an appreciation for business and independent enterprise, complete a business plan and have an understanding of the components of a successful business. Through group activities, computer simulations, hands-on experiences (ie Market Day, Dare to Dream, etc.) and competitions, students are challenged to start their own business, improve their business skills for future career opportunities, and advance in higher education. This class is conducted in collaboration with area businesses and youth entrepreneurs affiliated with the Entrepreneurship Teaching Network. Participation in DECA is highly recommended. Registration & Scheduling
This second level course is designed to provide students with additional training and experience in the areas of entrepreneurship and management. Students gain an appreciation for business and independent enterprise, expand their business plan, and gain a deeper understanding of the components necessary for a successful business. Through group activities, computer simulations, hands-on experiences and competitions, students are challenged to start their own business, improve their business skills for future career opportunities and advance in higher education. This class is conducted in collaboration with area businesses and youth entrepreneurs affiliated with the Entrepreneurship Teaching Network. Participation in DECA is highly recommended. Marketing objectives are co-curricular with the DECA competition and will occasionally be used as classroom projects.
This course is designed to meet the needs of three types of students: (1) those interested in majoring in accounting or business in college (2) those interested in learning about financial reporting for their own companies in the future, and (3) general office work Those interested in doing This course provides training in accounting principles, payroll and financial reporting. Students gain hands-on experience in accounting through the use of spreadsheets and computer-based accounting programs.
This course is designed to help students master basic skills in word processing, spreadsheet software, and the proper creation and application of professional presentations. Students will learn file management, file storage and retrieval, use a network, and share files with others for collaboration. Students will learn the software skills needed at Microsoft and Google to be effective in school and the workplace. Advanced projects integrating all Microsoft Office and Google software will be included in the course.
This course will explore the elements and principles of art with the need for ever-increasing knowledge of art technique. This class will use computer software such as Adobe Illustrator to create original artwork. Some basic Photoshop and digital camera skills will be introduced. This is a class for students who want to explore their art in a computer-based medium and for future career paths in design.
Business Academy: Marketing And Business Management Pathway
This course provides an overview of all phases of business life, including ownership, marketing, personnel, finance, administrative control, and the relationship of business to the social and economic environment in which it operates.
This course is designed to teach students to recognize the scope and structure of written communication in a business environment. Areas of study include planning, organizing, composing, and editing a variety of business correspondence. Current methods of appropriate communication through technology are covered with practical applications. Participation in DECA is highly recommended.
This course covers the principles and practices of business management around the functions of planning, organizing and controlling. Specific topics will include: management ethics, team dynamics, employee motivation, communication, decision making, leadership and management styles, productivity and organizational effectiveness.
Marketing principles include the structure of marketing organizations in a global environment. This course includes analysis of marketing functions, consumer behavior, segmentation, market research, product design, pricing, promotion, distribution and marketing strategies. Internet and e-mail activities are integrated to develop skills in data collection, application, and task analysis.
What Can You Do With A Business Management Degree? Understanding Your Options
Students in this course will meet at All Things Independence, a retail store and screen printing company. This course offers students a unique experiential learning opportunity to gain business and entrepreneurial skills useful for any career path. Students run a retail and screen printing business as part of their course. Students are responsible for all aspects of the business including but not limited to management, sales, research, purchasing, inventory, merchandising, graphic design, facilities management, accounting, financial analysis, screen printing and training. Students must apply and are selected through an interview process.
The Supervised Business Experience (SBE) program is an on-the-job learning experience that is an extension of the business education class. SBE training is designed for students in approved business training programs who are currently following a business academy pathway. The SBE program offers on-the-job experience that gives students the opportunity to practice academic and workplace skills. The SBE program facilitates the transition from the classroom to the workplace.
