Clinical Mental Health Programs – The Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) program, a 60-hour program, is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) and meets the requirements for licensure as a professional counselor in Tennessee and many other states. Our program is offered face-to-face in Knoxville, TN. Most students study full-time. After-hours options are available by appointment. Most classes are offered on Mondays and Thursdays.

This program prepares professionals to use strong professional credentials and interpersonal skills in a variety of counseling settings, including community agencies, nonprofit organizations, and private practice. Our program focuses on working with at-risk children and youth. Throughout our program, we adhere to our core values ​​- loyalty, humility, openness, respect, integrity and self-awareness – and engage in culturally sensitive, developmentally appropriate and ethical practices.

Starting in 2023, all graduate students will begin their studies only in the summer (June) semester. The application deadline is December 1, 2022. All applicants today will be considered for this program. If spaces remain after the pre-application deadline, we offer a second application opportunity until March 1, 2023.

CMHC students complete a semester-long, 100-hour internship in a clinical mental health counseling setting. During training, students focus on developing mentoring relationships. This event is closely monitored on site and on campus.

After training, CMHC students complete 900 hours of training per calendar year. During the internship, students focus on developing counseling relationships and assuming the responsibilities of entry-level professional counselors. As with training, this work is closely monitored both on campus and in the field.

Essentials Of The Clinical Mental Health Counseling Profession

Our CMHC program is designed to meet the requirements for licensure as a Professional Counselor as a Certified Mental Health Service Provider (LPC-MHSP) in Tennessee. In addition, accreditation by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) ensures smooth licensure in many other states. If you plan to practice in a state other than Tennessee, a faculty advisor can help you tailor your chosen courses to your educational requirements.

As a CACREP-accredited program, our program provides a fast track to the National Board of Certified Counselors certification offered by the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC).

Students admitted to the Clinical Mental Health and School Counseling programs have the opportunity to complete two tracks toward licensure requirements. Completed coursework provides students with a structured approach to meeting the requirements for licensure as a Professional Counselor (LPC) and Professional School Counselor in Tennessee. It takes a total of 63 hours to prepare a dual license. Faculty approval and application are required, and students must declare their intent during the first semester of the program. Faculty will review all applications and notify students prior to the end of the fall semester. Selected students remain in the program in which they are enrolled (e.g., school or clinical mental health), but must agree to and complete dual licensure training requirements.

The Counselor Training Center offers free individual and group counseling to students and helps students achieve a sense of well-being. Students work with counselors to create and achieve personal goals to improve their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
