Drivers Ed Classes Georgia – Learning to drive is a major milestone in life. Young or inexperienced drivers should learn safe driving techniques. The program offered by Savannah Technical College combines the Joshua Law elective with 30 hours of classroom instruction and six additional hours of drive time with an instructor. Most insurance companies offer a discount (around 10%) on insurance premiums on successful completion.

Savannah Technical College offers a (DDS-approved) Drivers Education Program in cooperation with the Georgia Drivers Education Commission (GDEC). Participants must attend all class dates for the full class period. If a certificate of completion is sought for 30 classroom hours and six hours of driving, participants must also complete six (6) hours of behind-the-wheel driving.

30 hours of classroom instruction now available in a mix of live, online instruction and self-study. This means a hybrid online meeting platform called Blackboard (similar to Zoom) as part of the lecture training. Students can interact directly with the instructor. Students are also required to complete their self-study work.

The college provides vehicles for students to use during their lessons. It’s the 2015 Kia Optimas, a 4-door sedan. Each vehicle is wrapped with “Student Driver” graphics to let other drivers know that training is in progress. The vehicles are equipped with video surveillance capabilities to ensure the safety of all participants.

Behind the wheel driver training lessons are available by one-on-one appointment and are 2 hours long. The Department of Driver Services requires that parents/guardians invest at least 40 hours of behind-the-wheel driving practice with their teen before taking their road test to obtain their license.

Training Lesson 1: The instructor takes the student to begin verifying that the skills listed above are satisfactory and begins practice with parallel parking, turnabouts, and highly structured driving routes exposed to light to moderate traffic.

Training Lesson 2: When students come for the second lesson, they will be exposed to moderate traffic for longer periods of time and will be introduced to parkways and highways and apply what they learned during Lesson 2.

Training Lesson 3: Final training includes review of previous lessons, extended exposure to moderate traffic, and introduction to interstate driving.

How Long Does Drivers Ed Online Take?

Students will practice entering and exiting Interstate 16. Practice with parents/guardians before this lesson is recommended.

Our program only offers 6-hours of behind-the-scenes training so our focus is on helping your student with more difficult driving skills. By the time your student reaches their first behind-the-wheels training session in college, they should be able to master the following skills:

Students attending the Driver’s Education Program require a valid learner’s permit or driver’s license. Attendance is also required for all classroom and rear wheel driving lessons. 70% passing grade is required for classroom training.

You may request a refund by emailing abrantley@ up to three (3) days prior to the start of the course. If it exceeds the three-day window, the only option available is to transfer to a new session. Refunds are not possible once the course has commenced.
