Today, universities face increasing demands for the quality of education, which is essential from the point of view of future graduates. Considering the need for constant improvement of the quality of medical educational programs, it is important to search for effective management strategies for them. A common trend is the development of electronic support tools to optimize curriculum planning, analysis, and coordination.

Based on the requirements we identified by analyzing the needs of curriculum designers, teachers, and administrators at five universities involved in the Building a Curriculum Infrastructure in Medical Education (BCIME) project, and evidence from the literature on curriculum development, we developed a curriculum methodological guidelines on innovations and software-based tools that aid in the management, mapping and analysis of curricula in medicine and healthcare.

In this article, we share our experience building and implementing the EDUportfolio, an online platform developed within our consortium designed to facilitate the harmonization and optimization of medical outcomes-based curricula. In response to ever-increasing demands on the quality of undergraduate education, universities require effective management strategies to maintain high-quality and balanced curricula with optimal outcomes. Curriculum mapping identifies educational content, applied pedagogy, and assessment methods through which it facilitates curriculum transparency and communication. These features are important for explaining and understanding what, when and how is taught [2]. Curriculum mapping activities have been shown to be useful in various fields and curricula related to medicine and health, including medicine [3, 4], dentistry [5], nursing [6], gerontology [7], veterinary medicine [2] or pharmacy. Medical terminologies and classification systems play an important role in curriculum mapping, as shown in a study by Komenda et al. [9]. As medical education moves toward outcomes-based education, the role of a common language to categorize and link all components of the curriculum is considered important. This fact was also highlighted in a report by Stoddard and Brownfield [10], who used a controlled vocabulary of 291 identifiers to classify educational activities. Health Issues (ICD) or Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) assist curriculum designers in semantic indexing of learning objectives and curriculum analysis.

Detailing learning objectives and grouping them into a comprehensive catalog can lead to easier ways of curriculum design and analysis. Furthermore, such catalog(s) can be used to compare educational institutions and their curricula nationally or even internationally. Several other systems (eg, medtrics [16], OPTIMED [17], prudentia [18], pharmacy curriculum management system [7], CurrMIT [19]) were described in a recent systematic review by Kononovich et al. [20].

The number and variety of publications presenting software solutions for curriculum mapping shows great interest in electronic support for the complex task of curriculum management and mapping. However, almost none of them support the international design and harmonization of higher education curricula. In order to improve the long-term process of harmonization of medical and healthcare curricula, we initiated the cooperation of five medical faculties in five European countries.
