If you’re applying online, your first step is to sign up for an account on the online federal marketplace – healthcare.gov. Below are detailed instructions, along with some screenshots, to streamline the application process. (Note, all photos were taken on January 16, 2014.)

You will be taken through several screens where you will (1) confirm your residency status and (2) who you are buying health insurance for. You must (3) agree to the privacy policy, and then (4) confirm your contact information.

The next screen is where you will be asked if you have received help applying for cover. Remember that it costs you nothing to seek help from a broker.

You can double check your subsidy eligibility by selecting the “I’m not sure” button or simply select “Yes” to go to the next step. Be prepared to answer income questions for all members of your household.

After entering information about who needs coverage, you will be taken through several screens where you will answer several questions to confirm that you are eligible to purchase insurance.

Note that you can end your session on healthcare.gov at any time and return later by logging in with your username and password. But make sure you’ve entered all your family and household information, otherwise you may have to re-enter it the next time you sign in. Family and household information must be filled in in one go!

After submitting your application, you must wait for confirmation (and invoice) from the service provider to confirm your administration. We recommend that you contact your service provider to ensure that they have received your information. However, since the information is sent to the service provider at the end of each day, you should wait at least 1-2 days before trying to call. The wait time to reach the phone provider is very long, so you may have to set up your speakers and have other things to do.
