Every year, US News & World Report ranks San Diego State University’s programs among the best in California and among the best of Cal State’s 23 universities. Here are six reasons why:

Strong partnerships with San Diego State University Community Schools have long been an important supplier of new teachers to the San Diego Community School District. We are working closely with districts to “grow” great new teachers for the district. Our public school partners understand and embrace the challenge of preparing the next generation of teachers.

Ma In Education

Each group is closely supervised by one or two faculty members (“group leaders”). The club and club leaders provide each student with a social and emotional support system. Team members share what they have learned with each other, creating additional learning opportunities and professional development.

Our teachers reflect the vibrant San Diego community, where people of many cultures, nationalities and languages share the community and school. Students learn how to appreciate cultural diversity while supporting student learning. Public school curriculum and field experiences focus on the strengths and characteristics of diverse communities, families, and individuals.

Our teacher programs bring together the best practice from public schools and the important knowledge developed by all researchers and scientists. Our students learn from researchers and practitioners, our world-renowned teachers and top teachers from local schools.

You can complete the certificate program in two semesters or three semesters. The three-time option is designed to serve students who need part-time work or have important family commitments.

In these groups, teacher educators complete an on-site college course at an elementary school while students teach at that school or a neighboring school. Each student completes student instruction at two different levels; one assignment at the elementary level (Grades K-3) and one assignment at the middle level (Grades 4-6).

Students in the English Single Subject Primary Certificate complete the following courses. Prerequisites must be completed before starting the program. Typically, students take these as part of their high school program and/or in the summer before the certificate program begins.

Our certification program has a field-based group preparation model. Students on various courses are divided into small groups of 25-30. To align the research and advice of SDSU teachers with best practices in local schools, blocks have been organized around our many public school partners in the San Diego area. Courses in the group are usually taught in public schools. Student teaching runs concurrently with university teaching, gathering the best ideas from university and public school staff.
