Doctorate Programs In Counseling Psychology – Our doctoral program in psychology (PhD) is APA accredited. Our program follows Boulder’s example of preparing physician-physicians with an emphasis on social justice.
The course requires full-time study (9-12 credits per autumn/spring semester) and residence in Lexington. Like all counseling psychology PhD programs, the program includes completion of a dissertation and one year of full-time accredited internship at an APA site, which usually requires relocation to another state. As a typical counseling psychology PhD program, our program takes most post-masters students (who enter the program with an applied psychology master’s degree) five years to complete and most pre-masters students complete seven years.

Many of our program graduates (click here to meet our alumni) find employment in mental health agencies (eg, medical centers, general agencies, group practices), university counseling centers, or federal facilities (eg, VAs, prisons). Some graduates work in private practice. Other graduates pursue research or teaching positions at higher institutions. The first work setting is usually close to the application of the specific type of experience of the internship year of the APPIC pre-doctoral student. Many member graduates were able to move to the director/manager level of their health delivery systems within three to seven years of graduation. Our students have completed clinical internships in a variety of settings in and around Lexington, including university counseling centers, community mental health agencies, private practices, clinical assessment, psychiatric hospitals, Veterans Health Administration Medical Centers (VA), correctional facilities, and specialized mental health clinics.

Typically, students entering a doctoral program have completed a master’s degree in psychology or counseling. We may accept strong applicants who have an undergraduate degree in psychology or a related discipline (eg, sociology, pre-med) but do not have a master’s degree; These students are expected to complete a master’s and practical work before starting doctoral and practical courses. Students discuss a specific program of study with an advisor. Students can often drop out of a doctoral course when they have completed a corresponding subject in the master’s course.
Drs. Hargons, Hammer, Rostosky, and Stevens-Watkins will begin graduate studies in fall 2023. GRE scores are optional (unless the applicant chooses to work with Dr. Stevens-Watkins, in which case a GRE score report is required). There are no minimum GRE score or cutoff requirements.

Applications for admission are evaluated by program faculty who carefully consider the applicant’s (a) GPA; (b) GRE score, if given; c) letters of recommendation addressing academic, research and consulting experience and interpersonal skills; (d) is consistent with the faculty’s research interests; e) A statement of academic goals outlined (ie it aligns with our training model and demonstrates values of social justice and excellence in written communication); (f) a written test demonstrating excellence in written communication; and (g) contribute to diversity, broadly defined to include individual social identities and background experiences. The program faculty holistically assesses the entire application of a potential student and makes decisions based not only on numerical data, but also on the assumed fit with the programme’s aims, needs and values. Therefore, a low reputation in one area can be a deterrent to professional forces in another area. The minimum GPA is >2.75 for undergraduates and 3.00 for graduates. The minimum TOEFL score is 79. In their proposal, students must articulate how their own research interests can fit into the research program of one or two members of the psychology faculty.
This interview process helps the faculty and prospective students to further assess their suitability with the program and planning of the faculty. After the conference day, the program faculty meets to review, discuss and make final decisions about admission offers.
We encourage prospective students to read the pages written above, as well as the handbook and program of study before sending out the Director of Training, as most questions are answered by these resources. Dr. Hammer’s website also provides in-depth advice on applying to PhD counseling psychology programs. One of the most common questions I get is “What is the difference between counseling psychology and clinical psychology?” Bottom line: these two personal psychologies are more similar than different (Norcross, Sayette, Martin-Wagar, 2021). The differences tend to be small and “in the middle”. You will find greater differences from program to program (whether counseling or clinical) than from a counseling psychology program as a whole to a clinical psychology program as a whole.
Many participate in psychology programs in both counseling and clinical psychology. If you want to attend a PhD, your program selection process is strongly influenced by which professors are appointed to research the topics that interest you, whether those professors are in psychology programs or in clinical programs. For example, our counseling psychology faculty at the University of Kentucky conduct research on topics such as gender, social justice, leadership, help-seeking, stigma, masculinity, multicultural standards, LGBTQIA+ health and wellness, ethnic health, academic persistence, and wellness. prevention of sexual violence, the justice system involves the population, substance abuse and HIV.
